Back in the 1960s as
costs where rising in the Formula 1 stockcars, a new class was created.
BriSCA (BRItish Stock Car Association) Formula 2 stockcars appeared on the
short oval tracks throughout the United Kingdom as a cheaper alternative to
the Formula 1 stockcars. Since then its has been one of the most popular
classes on the ovals, with over 500 licensed drivers racing each year. With
car turnouts at larger meetings sometimes being over 100.
In the early days of F2 all the cars would have been "home made", but now
most of the cars are factory built, by chassis builders such as Randall
Motorsport, HCD, Elite Racing, M-tec and NI builder A&D race preparations to
name but a few. The cars are front engined single seaters, powered mainly by
2 Litre Pinto engines, with some drivers opting for the more expensive
1300cc engine.
Formula 2s race at many circuits throughout England, Scotland, Northern
Ireland and the Isle of Man. As well as becoming ever more popular in
Holland. The cars race on both Tarmac and Shale tracks with some drivers
having separate cars for each surface.
There are several titles up for grabs throughout the season, including
World, European, British and National points championships. At every race
meeting the finishing position of a driver earns them points, these points
add up to give the drivers grades and the driver with the most points at the
end of the season becomes the National Points Champion.
The drivers are graded in accordance to there position in the National
Points table. When racing the cars line up in there roof grade with the
lowest to the front (Except in some championship races, such as the world
final). The grades are as follows. White Roof- May be a newcomer or someone
who has failed to score very many National points. Yellow Roof- Start behind
the White roofs, these are drivers with few National points. Blue Roof-
Start behind the whites and Yellows, these are drivers around the middle of
the National points table. Red Roof (Star Drivers)- These are drivers who
start near the back. These drivers are high up the National points table.
SUPERSTAR grade (Red Roof with Flashing lights)- These drivers are amongst
the fastest in the formula, and are the men to watch out for cutting there
way through the field from the back. Silver Roof- Current National points
Champion (currently 401 Barry Goldin) only one driver can parade the Silver
roof, and has to start from the back of the Superstars. Gold Roof- World
Champion (currently 647 Chris Burgoyne), again only one person gets the
honour of having a gold roof, and has to start right from the back of the
grid.
