Production cars

I have had requests for a production cars page, so here it is.
The Production car section will start of as one page and we will see how it goes from there, I will more than likely expand it to a few pages after a while. The page will concentrate on the Production cars that race at Nutts Corner every Wednesday night throughout the season.

Nutts Corner 26/12/01 (4 cars)
Not what you would call a great turnout of cars, but you can't fault those who did turn up.
The highlight of the heat was a brief battle between Colin Blake and Martin Hughes, with very little more on the entertainment front. Hughes took the win, with William Murray second, Colin Blake third and Ricky Shaw fourth, still complete with snow on the roof of the car.
The final followed a similar pattern, with all the action coming in the first bend as Murray spun Shaw. Blake led for a lot of the race before, Hughes got through, not to be seen again, Murray fought back came back well to pick up second, passing Blake in the closing laps, with Blake finishing third and Shaw finishing fourth.
Heat- 1 (Martin Hughes), 44 (William Murray), 145 (Colin Blake), 103  (Ricky Shaw)
Final- 1, 44, 145, 103

Nutts Corner 17/10/01 (10 cars)
A good turnout for the last meeting of the season and as a result seen better racing then there has been for the last few weeks.
Heat one seen a win for Weinston Weir who spent a lot of the race behind William Murray before battling in the cloing laps and Weir taking the win. There was a near dead heat for third between Ricky Shaw and Robert McDowell, Shaw taking the place.
The Final seen a win Weir fail to start the race. Colin Blake took a comfortable win from William Murray and Alister McCann.
Heat- 262, 44, 103, 19, 39, 46
Final- 145, 44, 46, 39, 995, 1

Final points Standings
1st- John Christie 62- 543 pts
2nd- William Murray 44- 476
3rd- Winston Weir 262- 406

Nutts Corner 10/10/01 (6 cars)

A poor turn out for the Productions, and the racing wasn't great either, a typical end of season affair. The highlight of the racing was a two battles in heat two, one between Weir and Murray, the other between Thursby and Blake, the later finishing the race in the wall.
Unfortuantly I had to leave early and missed the Final.

Heat 1- 1, 262, 44, 39, 145, 57
Heat 2- 1, 262, 44, 39
Final- SORRY, missed, had to leave early

Nutts Corner 3/10/01 (7cars)
Once again a dissapointing turn out for the productions, John Christie was out in practice, however did not make it out to race, Winston Weir was back, and Mervyn Crawford made a rare appearence. The meeting seen a hat trick of wins for William Murray, with Robert McDowell finishing second in heat 1 and Martin Hughes taking the runners up spot in the other heat and the final. In both the second heat and the final Colin Blake and Winston Weir had long battles for the third place, Weir coming out ahead in the heat and Blake getting the place in the final.
Heat 1- 44 William Murray, 19 Robert McDowell, 145 Colin Blake, 57 Mervyn Crawford, 103 Ricky Shaw, 1 Martin Mughes
Heat 2- 44, 1, 262 Winston Weir, 145 , 57, 103
Final- 44, 1, 145, 262, 103, 57

Nutts Corner 26/9/01 (7 cars)
Still a disappointing turn out of Production cars, but a few different cars, Davy Clarke made his first appearance of the season in what looks to be a new car, Alan Fisher was out once again in his 205, and the return of Wayne Hewitt. Maybe more notable was the absence of both John Christie and Winston Weir after there clash last week.
Heat one seen William Murray take off into a lead he would never lose, with Ricky Shaw finishing second and Fisher third, the highlight of the race however was a battle between Mervyn Thursby and Davy Clarke, Clarke eventually spinning Thursby before going on to finish fifth.
Heat two, Fisher ran away with the race, leaving Murray and Shaw to follow at a distance.
The final seen Davy Clarke spin another driver, this time taking out star driver William Murray in the opening laps, it was Fisher again who set the pace and was first over the line, but was then disqualified for a technical infringement, and thus handing the win to Shaw.
Heat 1- 44, 103, 205, 1, 995, 33
Heat 2- 205, 44, 103, 1, 39, 995
Final- 103, 39, 995, 1, 44

Nutts Corner 19/9/01- (7 cars)
Another drop in the turnouts, but it was interesting to see that Winston Weir had made a comeback (so what was wrong with him last week??).
Wier recorded another hat trick of wins, the two heat wins driving as a Blue roof and for some reason best known to himself, the promotor and the starter, driving as a red roof in the final (if anybody can explain this, please let me know). The new Irish Closed champion John Christie was second in both the heats.
In the final Weir drew for grid with the reds, and drew the back of the grid, however in the first bend got up the inside of John Christie and proceded in driving Christie into the wall, in a not very sportsman like manner, regardless of it being a contact formula. The race was stopped and re-started and with in a few laps Weir had hit the front, never to be cought, with Murray finishing Second and Martin Hughes third. So the question still remains, why was Weir not out for the Irish Championship, when he was clearly in with a good chance of winning it??

Heat 1- 262 W. Weir, 62 J Christie, 44 W. Murray, 46, 205, 1 M Hughes
Heat 2- 262, 62, 1, 44, 46, 205
Final- 44, 1, 46, 205

Nutts Corner 12/9/01- Irish Closed Championship- 9 cars
A disapointing turn out for the Irish championship and a few cars missing, including one of the favourites 262 Winston Weir.
The race for the Irish championship was over after the first corner when John Christie left the rest of the field sitting, William Murray who was second on the grid also had a straight forward race to finish second, but never looked like catching John Christie. Third was 37 Paul Nesbit using the borrowed car of 145 Colin Blake, Nesbit started at the back of the grid and picked the rest of the field off one by one to get up to third.
After the Championship race Christie pulled out of the rest of the meeting. Paul Nesbit went on to win the two heats, with William Murray second on both occasions.
Irish Championship- 62 John Christie, 44 William Murray, 37 Paul Nesbit, 103 Ricky Shaw, 39 Mervyn Thursby, 46, 19 Robert McDowell
Heat 1- 37, 44, 46, 19, 39
Heat 2- 37, 44, 39, 103, No other finishers

Nutts Corner 5/9/01- 9 cars

Another good nights racing from the productions. Two heat wins from 262 W. Weir both time swith John Christie closing down on him in the later stages of the race.
In the final Weir chose to start from the back instead of in his roof grade (blue), the final turned out to be a good race, with a long battle between Weir, Murray and Christie, before Weir eventually spun Christie and then got passed Murray. During the time of this battle Robin McDowell had disapeared into the distance with Mervyn Thursby finishing second and Weir getting a third place. The last bend saw a  three car battle for fourth between Christie, Murray and Colin Blake, Christie eventually taking the place.

Heat 1- 262, 62, 95, 39, 19
Heat 2- 262, 62, 39, 145, 95
Final- 19, 39, 262, 62, 145, 44

Nutts Corner (8/8/01)- 8 cars

Back to the normal car turnouts, although the racing was still exciting.
Winston Weir had another good meeting taking wins in all three races, and was only reallt threatened in heat 2 when John Christie and him had a dice for the lead on the closing laps. Christie pushing Weir wide then Weir pushed Christie wide, before the two cars went wide on the last bend and William Murray nearly got up the inside of the two of them, and was able to out drag Christie to the line for second.
In the Final Weir got a good start and dissapeared into the distance and never looked like being caught, although Christie was getting closer in the closing laps.

Heat 1-262 (Winston Weir), 62 (John Christie), 44 (William Murray), 95 (Dain McGarry), 21 (Martin O'Flagherty), 19 (Robert McDowell)
Heat 2- 262, 44, 62, 21, 1, 95
Final 262, 62, 44, 21, 19, 46
Top points scorer: 262 W. Weir- 44 pts

Nutts Corner (1/8/01)- 12 cars

A great turnout for the production cars, and hopefully this is a sign of things to come. Good close racing iin all three races, and included a red grade clash of Martin O'Flagherty (21) and William Murray (44). Wienston Weir won heat 2 and the final and was leading heat 1 until the last few laps when the car seemed to die and he pulled off. One of the best nights racing that I have seen from the productions in a long time and maybe a sign of change for the better.

Heat 1- 103 (Ricky Shaw), 95, 21, 1, 19, 39
Heat 2- 262 (Weinston Weir), 95, 62, 44, 103, 21
Final- 262, 62, 103, 95, 19, 190

Nutts Corner (4/7/01)- 8 cars
A better nights weather than last week and also a better weeks racing. As with the F2s there was a different winner in each race, Heat 1 was won by 103- Ricky Shaw (whos car is for sale if anyone is interested), heat 2 saw a win for 62- John Christie, and the Final saw a win for Saloon stockcar star Wiensten Weir, driving as a yellow grade in the productions. Heat 2 saw a very close finish with three cars going into the last bend in contention, but John Christie took the win on the line.  John also had a few scraps with 21 Martin O'Flagherty, with John getting the better of Martin in heat 1 and Martin coming out better off in the Final
Heat 1- 103 (Ricky Shaw), 262 (Wiensten Wier), 95 (Dain McGarry), 62 (John Christie), 21 (Martin O'Flagherty), 44 (William Murray)
Heat 2- 62, 262, 44, 103, 21, 1 (Martin Hughes)
Final- 262, 103, 95, 21, 62, 44
Top points scorer: 262 W Wier, 38 points.

Nutts Corner (27/6/01)- 9 cars
As with the F2s the weather played havoc with the racing. On the whole however the productions put on a good show, with pleanty of contact, and an accident filled Final. Three wins for Robert McDowell, with William Murray coming second in a heat and the final, and John Christie coming second in the other heat. The three races contained position close racing between John Christie and William Murray with a lot of bumper work.
Heat 1- 19 (R McDowell), 44 (W Murray), 62 (J Christie), 95 (D McGarry), 21 (M O'Flagherty)
Heat 2- 19, 62, 44, 21, 95
Final- 19, 44, 21, 103 (R Shaw)      (only 4 cars finished)
Top Point Scorer: 19 R McDowell, 44 points.

About Production Cars                                                               [back to top]

The Production cars featured in this site are the ones that run every Wednesday night during the season at Nutts Corner Raceway.
A variety of cars compete in the Production class, including Sierras, Chevettes, Mk 2 Escorts and VW Golfs. The cars are re-enforced with front and rear bumpers similar to that found on a 1300 saloon stockcar. The cars are allowed to use up to 2.6 litre engines, with a similar spec to F2 (but bigger). The cars must weigh between 965kg and 1015kg. Unlike the F2s the cars must use remould tyres and are not allowed adjustable shocks.
The class originally started racing at Portadown along with the F2s, in the early days of stockcar racing in Northern Ireland.
Some of the more famous faces to have competed in the class are, Ex F2 star Ivor Greenwood, Ex National Hotrod World Champion Davy Evans, and more recently current British Formula 3 star Derek Hayes.
Similar to the F2s at Nutts Corner it doesn't take a big grid to make the racing exciting, with grids of only 7 or 8 there is always some close racing in the productions as the star drivers try to make their way to the front.
